Title:
Exact Learning of Description Logic Ontologies
Abstract:
In many subfields of artificial intelligence, ontologies are used to provide a common vocabulary for the application domain of interest, to give a meaning to the terms in the vocabulary, and to describe
the relations between them. Authoring ontologies is a laborious task that requires a combined expertise of domain experts, who know the vocabulary of terms used in a particular subject area and have an understanding of the conceptual relationships between
them, and of knowledge engineers, who can formalise these relations in an appropriate ontology language. In our work, we formalise the dialogue between an expert and a knowledge engineer within the exact learning model. We admit questions (“is it the case
that a given statement follows from your knowledge?”) and (“is the ontology constructed complete?”). We study the complexity of learning ontologies within this model and present our tool which we use to investigate the impact of various learning strategies.
