EPFL CIS and RIKEN AIP started a seminar, titled “EPFL CIS - RIKEN AIP Joint Seminar series" from October, 2021.

EPFL is located in Switzerland and is one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan science and technology institutions. EPFL has both a Swiss and international vocation and focuses on three missions: teaching, research and innovation.

The Center for Intelligent Systems (CIS) at EPFL, a joint initiative of the schools ENAC, IC, SB, STI and SV seeks to advance research and practice in the strategic field of intelligent systems.

RIKEN is Japan's largest comprehensive research institution renowned for high-quality research in a diverse range of scientific disciplines.

RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project (AIP) houses more than 30 research teams ranging from fundamentals of machine learning and optimization, applications in medicine, materials, and disaster, to analysis of ethics and social impact of artificial intelligence.

Title: Machine Learning Technologies for Disaster Resilience

Abstract:
In recent years, natural disasters such as a major earthquake and the accompanying big tsunami that cause enormous damage occur. It takes a huge amount of time and cost to restore a social system that suffered greatly every time. Disaster prevention and mitigation have become important social issues in Japan. In our research team, in the event of a natural disaster that brings about such a serious disaster, we aim to research and develop machine learning technologies. In this WS, In this seminar, we will present an overview of the research results of our team, including dynamic and static analysis of earthquakes and forecasting of typhoon intensification.

Bio:
Naonori Ueda received the B.S., M.S., and Ph D degrees from Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, in 1982, 1984, and 1992, respectively. In 1984, he joined the Electrical Communication Laboratories, NTT, Japan, where he was engaged in research on image processing, pattern recognition, and computer vision. In 1991, he joined the NTT Communication Science Laboratories. From 1993 to 1994, he was a visiting scholar at Purdue University, USA. In 2010-2013, Director of NTT Communication Science Laboratories. He is a head of NTT Machine Learning & Data Science Center since 2014, and Director of Ueda Research Laboratory since 2016 (NTT Fellow). He engaged in research on image processing, pattern recognition, statistical machine learning, and data mining. Since 2016, he is a Deputy Director, Center for Advanced Intelligence Project, RIKEN, where he engaged in AI research on medical science, weather, natural sciences such as disaster prevention and reduction, and social science based on machine learning technology. He is a Research Supervisor, Mathematical Information Platform, Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) CREST, and is a visiting professor at Kyoto University Graduate School of Informatics and Kobe University Graduate School of System Informatics.
